"Coach Partners shows how to tackle a charging project the smart way, one phase at a time: grid capacity and electrical foundation first, chargers second. The result is an installation ready to electrify an entire fleet."

From medium-voltage substation to a 600 kW fast-charging hub

How Coach Partners in Maldegem worked with Powerland to build a high-power charging infrastructure in two phases: from a new medium-voltage substation to a 600 kW Kempower fast-charging system and smart AC charge points.

  • Client: Coach Partners – Van Hoorebeke en Zoon
  • Location: Maldegem, Belgium
  • Sector: Passenger transport (buses and coaches)
  • Solution: Medium-voltage substation + DC fast charging + AC charging

About Coach Partners

Coach Partners is one of the largest independent coach operators in Flanders. The group was formed by several family businesses joining forces, including Van Hoorebeke en Zoon in Maldegem, and invests every year in keeping its fleet modern. The next step in that journey: going electric.

The challenge: enough power for electric buses

Charging electric buses and coaches takes far more power than a standard business connection can deliver. Fast-charging several vehicles at once calls for more than powerful chargers alone. It also requires a robust grid connection and an electrical infrastructure that can distribute that power safely.

Coach Partners therefore needed a partner who could handle the entire project, from medium voltage and low-voltage distribution to chargers, cabling and back-end.

The approach: two phases

Powerland delivered the project step by step. Phase one laid the electrical foundation: a new medium-voltage substation and a main switchboard, with additional outgoing circuits already in place for the future chargers. Phase two brought the DC fast chargers, the AC charge points and all the cabling. This allowed the site to grow gradually, with no work done twice.

What we delivered

1,600 kVA medium-voltage substation
Supply and installation of a new 1,600 kVA medium-voltage substation, including an automatic reclosing kit. Powerland also carried out the groundworks for the substation and rerouted the existing drainage pipe.

Main low-voltage switchboard
A new main switchboard with high-capacity circuits for the fast-charging installation, a separate supply for the existing building and dedicated circuits for the AC charge points.

600 kW Kempower fast-charging system
A central 600 kW Kempower C-series power unit connected to 6 charging satellites: 2 with dual outputs and 4 with single outputs, providing 8 DC charge points in total. Power is shared dynamically between the vehicles currently charging. Cable retractors keep the charging cables tidy and safe.

8 AC charge points at 22 kW
4 dual charging posts fitted with 22 kW Etrel Inch Pro chargers, mounted on concrete bases, for vehicles parked on site for longer periods.

Cabling and groundworks
Around 1.4 km of heavy-duty power cable between the substation and the power unit, plus data cabling for communication. Powerland also carried out all the related groundworks.

Back-end, documentation and inspection
All charge points were connected to and configured on the charging platform. Powerland also handled the full technical file and the compliance inspection of the installation.

What made the difference?

  • One partner for everything — Medium voltage, low voltage, chargers, cabling, groundworks and back-end, all delivered by a single integrator.
  • A phased approach — Grid capacity and electrical foundation first, chargers second. Each phase builds seamlessly on the one before.
  • Built for heavy-duty power — A 1,600 kVA substation and a 600 kW fast-charging system, designed for charging buses and coaches.
  • Flexible charging — Dynamic power sharing ensures every vehicle makes the most of the available capacity.
  • Delivered turnkey — From groundworks to final inspection, the installation was handed over fully operational.

The results in numbers

1,600 kVA medium-voltage substation · 600 kW Kempower fast-charging system · 8 DC charge points · 8 AC charge points at 22 kW · approx. 1.4 km of power cable
